Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM Cave)
After a soft hike through the ‘Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve’, crossing the river 3 times, you arrive at the mouth of the cave.
Here you’ll feel a sense of awe which may have been shared by the ancient Maya, who believed this was the entrance to the Xibalba, the underworld.
To enter, you’ll swim into the cave’s dark depths, following an underground river through tunnels of limestone before emerging to climb higher into a cathedral-like chamber. Marvel at the intricate limestone formations, with stalagmites and stalactites.
Your guide will point out the artifacts that once held offerings and the distinct evidence of human sacrifice found within the cave. Most notably, the Crystal Maiden, completely calcified after remaining in the same spot for over 1,000 years.
